Siphon fish ladders provide free passage to fish at recreational navigation locks

In the villages Wier and Oude Leije in the Province of Fryslân two locks are being build for recreational navigation. Simultaneous with the construction of the locks two siphon fish ladders are build to enable fishpassage past the locks. The siphon fish ladder for Oude Leije is currently being constructed at the production facility in Medemblik. The fish ladder will form a bypass channel for the lock chamber and will be connected to the waterways on both sides of the lock via subterranean pipes. The section of the fish passage that will hold the actual fish ladder, including the baffles, will be partly visible in the terrain for the tourists that pass through the navigation lock. The top of the fish ladder will be fitted with portholes to offer a view on the interior of the fish ladder. The lock at the village of Wier will be fitted with a similar fishladder in autumn.
